Change Visa Status

If you already have a temporary non-immigrant visa and wish to switch to an F-1 student visa, you must first select the university where you intend to study (from the US-Universities List) and complete the international application form. For the school to grant F-1 Visas to international students, USCIS approval is required. You should get in touch with the school’s admissions office if you have any questions.

When your application for admission as an international student is approved, you will get a form I-20 from the school’s DSO and be registered in the SEVIS database.

“The school is required to transfer your SEVIS record to any school you want, even if you have finished your studies there or have been dismissed. Work with the DSO at your new school to try to find a solution if your current or prior school won’t transfer your SEVIS record. SEVIS records cannot be refused transfer by a school for any monetary or commercial considerations.”

Following Mailing

Await the response from USCIS. A confirmation letter with an application receipt number takes around two weeks to arrive (i.e. LIN, WAC, EAC). By entering your receipt number in the USCIS Case Progress, you may determine the status of your application. A Request for Information or a Request for Evidence could also be made to you. Consult your DSO before responding to the inquiry. Insufficient cash and late filing are the two typical reasons for denying a change of status. To ensure a smooth application procedure, make sure to start early and get in touch with the school DSO long before the expiration date of your existing visa.

Attending Approval

You have the right to stay in the country legally until your application is granted or denied once you have submitted the Change of Status application to USCIS and your record has been posted to the SEVIS database. You should remain in the US while your application is being processed. Depending on the USCIS centre processing the application, it now takes 2 to 4 months for USCIS to respond to student visa applicants.

Household Members

When you petition to alter your status to F-1, your spouse or children who are travelling with you as your dependents can apply for F-2 Family of Foreign Student status. The DSO will upload them to the SEVIS database and include them on your form I-20. You must demonstrate the availability of additional cash to pay for their living expenses when you apply for a change of status. You must also demonstrate your relationship by submitting the original translation of your marriage certificate and/or your children’s birth certificate. Their F-2 status is reliant on yours as an F-1 international student. So, if you alter your status, your family must also change their status, and vice versa.

Transferring

You must be a full-time student and in good academic standing in order to transfer to another university while on an F-1 student visa. You must also confirm that the institution you are transferring to has received USCIS approval to accept foreign students.

Traveling While Transferring

Keep in mind that you will need a Form I-20 from the institution that has your active or initial record if you intend to leave the country during the transfer procedure. Travel must therefore either.

Having an active Form I-20 from the transfer-out school, and started and finished before the transfer release date.

Started and finished with a preliminary Form I-20 from the transfer-in school following the transfer release date.

First Status Change

If you wish to transfer right away after arriving at a US school from abroad, you must first report to the institution that is indicated on your Form I-20. Your SEVIS record should be activated and transferred to the new school you intend to attend by the School DSO.
